Barbie's Dreamhouse Adventures theme park

CHOOSE PROJECT

  • Top challenges we overcame

The experience relied on two entirely different production styles working together in real time. The challenge was creating a format where pre-recorded animation and live performance felt seamless, natural, and believable to children.

    CHALLENGE ONE

Blending pre-animated content with live, motion-captured performance

    CHALLENGE TWO

Preserving the authenticity of a globally recognised IP

Barbie’s tone, humour, worldview, and personality needed to feel exactly like the Netflix series — no drift, no inconsistencies. The scripts had to align perfectly with Mattel’s character standards while still functioning in an interactive, theme-park environment.

Each scenario required branching outcomes based on audience interaction. The challenge was creating flow charts and script structures where every path still made sense, hit key story beats, and returned cleanly to the main narrative.

    CHALLENGE THREE

Designing multiple story paths without confusing the narrative

The actors needed enough structure to guide children’s responses — but enough freedom to adapt to unpredictable answers. Balancing those needs was a major scripting challenge.

    CHALLENGE FOUR

Writing dialogue that worked for both animation and live improvisation

    CHALLENGE FIVE

Ensuring the experience was educational, entertaining, and age-appropriate

The scenarios had to engage 6–11-year-olds, incorporate learning themes, and still feel like a true Barbie adventure. This meant shaping moments that were playful and aspirational, without overwhelming or oversimplifying.

The scripts needed to work in Mexico, Germany, Saudi Arabia, China, and other locations — requiring universal themes, clear language structures, and a format robust enough to scale internationally without losing charm or clarity.

    CHALLENGE SIX

Creating five distinct yet consistent scenarios across cultures and parks

    Brief

For this project, iP2Entertainment were tasked with creating educational, interactive theme parks for 6-11-year-olds based on the Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures Netflix TV series.

We needed to craft an interactive experience blending pre-recorded animation segments with live-acted, motion-captured animation. This innovative approach allowed audiences to interact directly with Barbie and other characters.

The challenge was to conceptualise, format, and script five engaging scenarios that seamlessly integrated these elements.

    Research

We began by immersing ourselves in the Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures series to grasp the characterisations, tone of voice, and worldview of Barbie and her friends. This deep dive ensured our scripts would feel authentic and true to the beloved IP.

    Format development

Understanding how to blend live-action segments with pre-animated sequences was critical.

We created a format that incorporated different outcomes based on live interactions, developing a comprehensive flow chart to map possible scenarios and their scripted ends.

    Script development

We split the scripting process into two parts:

    1. Pre-Animated Segments: These traditional scripts drove the narrative forward and were written as typical screenplay scripts, focusing on engaging and educational content.

    2. Interactive Elements: To create seamless interaction, we scripted questions Barbie could ask the audience, designed to elicit specific responses. This method allowed the actor to guide the story naturally, using children's answers to transition smoothly into the next animated segment.

Our comprehensive research into Barbie’s Dreamhouse Adventures ensured that our scripts were authentic to the characters.

We meticulously crafted the format, accommodating various interactive outcomes.

The scripts were tailored to combine traditional narrative with live interaction, keeping young audiences engaged.

    Result

The show debuted in the theme park in Mexico to great acclaim.

Following its success, the interactive experience has been implemented in other Mattel Inc. theme parks worldwide, including in Germany, Saudi Arabia, and China, highlighting the global appeal and effectiveness of our creative approach.
